Athletics
Van Riebeeckstrand Primary has an inter-house athletics meeting every year. This usually takes place at the end of the year so that learners who have reached the top four positions have enough time to prepare for the following year’s zonal competition.
We also participate annually in other athletics events if our program allows it. The Melkbosstrand community is very blessed to have top coaches in the area whom the children can make use of for extra coaching.
We have been very fortunate to have twelve provincial athletes in our school for the last five years.

These schools include Durbanville, Bastion, Gene Louw, Eikestad, just to name a few. Most matches take place on Thursdays, but there are regular Friday matches as well.
We are also privileged to have Enhance Hockey Academy who has joined us to assist in developing our learners’ and coaches’ skills.

Cricket
Van Riebeeckstrand Primary’s cricket has immensely improved over the last four years. We regularly played against schools that only had one team per age group and at that point we did not have an u/10 side at all. We then decided to join the Northern League where we could ensure that all our learners from Grade 1 – 7 could get enough playing time and compete against the best.

Mountain Biking
Mountain Biking is a popular sport at Van Riebeeckstrand Primary and is offered during term two and three. Our riders train twice a week. Mondays we focus on skill training that takes place on the school grounds and Wednesdays we generally do a outride. These training sessions and outrides are supervised by our Head of Mountain Biking and volunteering parents. Van Riebeeckstrand Primary participates in the Spur School Mountain Bike League which is held four times during a year at various venues in the Western Cape.

Swimming
Every year we have an inter-house swimming competition at Ou Skip where our learners from grades 1 – 7 may participate in a variety of events. From the inter-house competition, a swimming team is selected that will participate in a few galas throughout the year. We also have a social group of swimmers who come to practice during the week but do not participate in any competitions. This practice time is specifically there for those learners who would like to improve their skills.
Our learners get a lot of exposure when they participate in other schools’ galas and usually do excellently at the competitions.

Tug of War
Tug of war is the fastest-growing sport at Van Riebeeckstrand Primary. We are the largest school in the country participating in the tug of war competitions. There are four different kilogram sections in which our learners participate. For the last three years, we have won WP colours in three of those divisions and have represented WP at the South African Championships. We won our first gold medal in 2020 which makes us the best in the country in that weight category. Our other two teams both won silver medals at the South African Championship.

Target Shooting
Target shooting is only offered to Grade 7 learners due to the number of available guns and space constraints. During the winter months when the league is running, our learners participate in competitions almost every weekend and do excellently. Our learners are usually in the top 5 of their age group every year and many acquire provincial colours.

Cross Country
Cross country training starts during Term 2. Our runners participate in the WPÂ Cross Country league.
Races are held on Friday afternoons during Term 2 as well as Term 3. All runners must preferably wear running shoes. Â The competition is fierce and athletes need to be reasonably fit.
The top 20 athletes (boys and girls) in each age group (u/10 to u/14) will compete in the Western Province Cross Country Championships which is normally held in Term 3. A team will then be chosen to compete in the Western Cape Championships. In recent years some of our runners have then been chosen to participate in the SA Cross Country National Championships, which is normally held during September.
Our aim with cross country is to make running fun for learners. We want to develop a love for running that will hopefully become part of their lifestyles. Increased general fitness will help with all the other sports offered at VRS. Cross country is not for the faint-hearted and requires grit and determination to succeed.
